HVAC systems are fairly resilient. They can withstand quite a bit of wear and tear. That said, they’re far from infallible; at some point, they’re bound to experience functional problems.

The question is: what kinds of HVAC problems should you look out for? Good question! We’re going to review 4 of the common HVAC problems below.

1. Dirty Filters

Perhaps the most common of all HVAC problems is the problem of the dirty filter. HVAC air filters are exposed to substantial amounts of dust and debris. After all, their entire purpose is to keep that dust and debris out of the HVAC system.

However, because of this, they become absolutely inundated in a very short amount of time. Unfortunately, once this happens, the efficiency of the HVAC system suffers, thereby wasting energy and incurring undue wear and tear.

As such, you must change your air filter every 2 to 3 months. If you have pets in your home (like cats and dogs), you should instead consider a change monthly.

2. Refrigerant Leaks

In order for an air conditioner to run, it must be filled with refrigerant. As long as this refrigerant stays in the system, it won’t need to be replaced. Unfortunately, on occasion, an air conditioner’s refrigerant line will become pierced, allowing refrigerant to spill out of it.

This is fairly easy to spot. All you have to do is look for a wet spot under the line that leads from the AC condenser into the house.

If the refrigerant is, indeed, leaking, the line will need to be patched. Once it’s patched, a new batch of refrigerant will need to be added.

3. Thermostat Inconsistencies

Is your HVAC system creating air that is much hotter or much colder than what your thermostat reads? If so, there could be a number of factors to blame.

For instance, your air conditioner could be missized, leading to short cycling. The sensors in your cooling and heating systems could be compromised as well, causing each to communicate poorly with the thermostat. Your ducts might even be dirty, resulting in poor airflow.

In any case, you’re advised to call up your local Longview, TX HVAC specialist for assistance. He or she will identify the problem and take action to fix it.

4. Clogged Ducts

One last problem to look out for is the problem of clogged ducts. Ducts clog over time as they’re inundated with more and more dust and debris. Unfortunately, this impairs airflow, leading to temperature inconsistencies from room to room.

As such, it’s wise to clean your duct system every 5 years or so. An HVAC specialist can get the job done for you.
